Filmport Studios, Toronto / Quadrangle Architects
situation:
The Filmport facility, which opened its first phase on June 5, 2008, is Toronto’s mega film centre and sits on 20 hectares at the east end of the city’s waterfront. When completed, it is expected to include as much as 3 million square feet of studio, theatre, retail, office and production space.
assessment:
Aercoustics was responsible for providing base building acoustical engineering services for the proposed Deluxe Entertainment Services Group facilities at Filmport. The project consists of a new four-storey building which containing office, lab, screening, Foley, recording, mixing, ADR (dubbing) and theatre spaces.
The two bottom floors house the broadcast studios. About 1000 sq m of double height spaces will be used for three TV studios. Another 1500 sq m will be used for radio studios. There will be other technical spaces as well to serve the TV broadcasting.
The work was divided into four phases pertaining to the base building design: schematic design, design development, working drawings and construction.
solution:
Aercoustics provided schematic noise and vibration isolation solutions or room treatments, and lists of equivalent alternatives, as well as design documentation detailing and acoustic analyses to deal with noise generated from the various production and broadcast activities.
results:
This is an on-going project and the initial reaction from the media and industry has been highly favorable with much praise.
