Long before he took up authoring books on rock and ice climbing, Aercoustics Principal, Marc Bracken topped his engineering degree by writing his Master’s thesis on computer modeling for speech recognition. From there, Marc’s work has exemplified how acoustics, noise and vibration often overlap. In addition to hundreds of architectural acoustics studies for performing arts centres and cinemas around the world, he spearheaded one of the largest vibration studies ever undertaken: the TTC Rail Vibration Study, surveying the entire Toronto transit system. The overlap comes in when he does stuff like floating an entire multi-million dollar condo building on rubber pads to isolate it from the subway line running underneath it; or isolating the Canadian embassy in Berlin from the subway using a raft slab.
