Billy Bishop Island Airport

Location:

  • Eastern Canada

The Challenge:

To provide solutions that satisfied noise reduction recommendations resulting from engine run-ups and taxiing at a busy downtown Toronto airport. Effective acoustical design for airport infrastructure was essential to mitigate noise impacts on neighboring properties.

The Innovation:

To develop the best solutions, Aercoustics created detailed, creative computer models of the airport, analyzing how taxiing and engine run-ups affected surrounding areas. By applying expertise in acoustical design for airport infrastructure, we collaborated with NAV Canada to design and implement a six-metre-high, 82-metre-long barrier. This structure, built with a rigid vinyl frame and a new and recycled PVC core, effectively reduced sound levels as predicted, meeting noise reduction recommendations.

This project demonstrated how acoustical design for airport infrastructure can deliver practical, sustainable solutions that enhance airport operations while minimizing noise impact.
