Remembering Mohan Barman
It is with a heavy heart that we share that on Monday, March 6th, 2023 we lost a legend in our industry – Mohan Barman.
Mohan had an illustrious career as one of the pioneers in the acoustical engineering consulting space in Canada. He focused on architectural acoustics and building design. Over his career, he enjoyed working with some of the best architects and engineers in Canada. His most notable projects include the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto, the Life Sciences Centre at the University of British Columbia, and the Bahen Centre for Information Technology at the University of Toronto.
In 1980, as one of the founders of Barman Coulter Swallow & Associates, Mohan trained three generations of acoustic consultants in Canada, including the leaders of modern-day Aercoustics. In 1993, Mohan joined his former employees, Marc Bracken, Vince Gambino, Bob Rimrott and John O’Keefe, to take over Aercoustics Engineering. From 1993, until his retirement in 2018, Mohan continued to train and mentor young engineers, sharing his passion for acoustics and teaching the theories behind it. He often led several lunchtime discussions or training sessions for new Aercoustics members. These sessions were affectionately named in honour of him – U of Mo – and his legacy will live on as we continue to hold sessions even after he retired.
He was known for his quiet, soft-spoken approach but had a true passion and curiosity for all things technical. His legacy will live on in those of us who continue to practice in a way that honours the theory and science of acoustics as he taught us. We know that Mohan is at peace and likely unraveling the many mysteries of the universe!
