CANMET Research Labs

Location:

  • Eastern Canada

The Challenge:

CANMET Materials is the largest research centre in Canada dedicated to the fabrication, processing and evaluation of metals and materials. Shared with the McMaster University campus, the 145,000 square-foot complex includes facilities for casting, rolling and forming metal, and designing and testing new materials. Aercoustics acted as the acoustic, noise, and vibration consultant for the project. Vibration isolation was a particular concern, as heavy impact machinery was located in the same facility as sensitive equipment.

The Innovation:

The design of laboratory spaces to meet the vibration requirements of the sensitive equipment was crucial. Other services included sound isolation between spaces, noise control of the mechanical systems to ensure that the background sound is consistent with the use of the spaces, and acoustical treatment of the laboratories for speech intelligibility.
