The Challenge:

This $42M complex, located in Medicine Hat, Alberta, features an art gallery, a museum, a 140 seat Studio Theatre and the main 700 seat Auditorium. The Auditorium was built function as either a traditional concert hall or a proscenium arch theatre.

The Innovation:

The Main Auditorium features a custom designed orchestra shell on stage and adjustable acoustic banners in the house. The two combine to provide a formidable range of acoustical flexibility. In its orchestra configuration, the room’s sound strikes an elegant balance. It’s powerful but not too loud, reverberant without lacking in clarity. There’s a lovely spatial bloom yet the sound still maintains intimacy. The complex, built to mark Alberta’s centennial is a thrilling new addition to Canada’s cultural scene.
