The Challenge:

The mass timber lightweight construction of this facility presented challenges with vibration isolation for research imaging and sound isolation performance across all spaces.

The Innovation:

Aercoustics was brought on to this project because we are at the forefront of acoustics for laboratory design, from human comfort and research integrity to sustainability and new building types. Mass timber construction is an evolving building type, often used in commercial and residential design. However, the current industry standards for laboratories and research facilities do not always work with wood construction. Careful and innovative approaches are required to find practical and cost-effective solutions, with the highly technical requirements of research projects. Our team has developed strategies to resolve these challenges, including strategic location of sensitive uses, adding resilient pads between structural timber elements, and incorporating decoupling elements into the wall or floor assemblies.
