The Challenge:
Replicate the intimacy of the former Tom Patterson Theatre with its elongated thrust stage while modernizing acoustics. The acoustic challenge for the thrust stage was to deliver clear, intelligible speech. The priority for the space is for unamplified spoken word and its ability to reach every patron clearly—particularly when actors are at the other end of the thrust stage and facing away from the audience.
The Innovation:
The Tom Patterson Theatre has been designed to create an intimate theatre experience, foster education, and engage with the community. The crown jewel of the project is the 600-seat Main Theatre with an elongated thrust stage for unamplified performances. Aercoustics delivered full acoustic design support for this project, including detailed room acoustic modelling on our proprietary software. The acoustics in the Patterson are really second to none.
